Twice in one day? ::sigh:: Ok, it's time -once more- to play Is This Broadway.com Photo Gallery Caption Being Offensive?

For those who need a reminder how to play:

1) Check out this photo album.
2) Click on the 5th picture ... the one with Darren Criss and Hunter Parrish after a performance of Godspell.

Lazy, sloppy, and while not as offensive as the Nick Jonas "all gays dress well" annoyingness from earlier today, I don't quite care for the way they toss away what's bound to be a gaggle of gay readers as a "few fellas." Ironic or not, unclear writing doesn't help a cause.

First off (this is just the Grammar Nazi in me), there's a missing apostrophe after "Brothers" in "not only is the Jonas Brothers' frontman...", but my biggest peev is the gossip-style tone of the writer. Or maybe it's the nonchalant way it's reported all gays dress well. Maybe something was lost in translation from The Advocate's initial interview, but this piece of reporting really rubbed me the wrong way.

Reviews have come out since our hard press opening January 13 and I have to say I'm floored and humbled by the kind words from our local press representatives. This piece is thought provoking, absurd, and focuses largely the inner life of one man. I considered the fact that I, like Julian, had been sitting in one place the entire time. A snipit from The Brown Paper Box Co.'s blog. We open TO TREE this week in Chicago and I'm stoked to get it on its feet. If you're around town, hit me up and I'll make sure you get in.

"I've never worked so small in my life," is what I keep telling people when asked how production for TO TREE is going. I'm used to working on musicals, what with their bevvy of choruses, lanky-armed musical directors, ever-inventive choreographers, and throngs of people working backstage. I'm used to sharing rehearsal time with other collaborators dolling out their insight on dance breaks, duets, quick-changes, and the logistics of homemade vs. store bought stage blood.

That is not the case with TO TREE, no sir and ma'am.

Rehearsals have been intimate in a way I've never experienced before. Chris, Lance, and I have read and reread the script together a good, safe to say, 15+ times. Straight through at times, but also stopping here and there to poke at a word, flesh out an idea, and play at angles at which to attack moods, feelings, or intentions. Just three of us working together discussing trees and redemption, guilt and roots, apple pies and Cheese Whiz.

As 2011 ends, the first month of 2012 will consist of final rehearsals, building, focusing, and polishing - all ending in a three-week world premiere run. The Brown Paper Box Co. is starting the year off busy and right.

I'm writing about The Brown Paper Box Co. (the new non-profit theatre company I recently co-founded) and our Kickstarter campaign. We are in the pre-production stages of the world premiere of TO TREE, a 2-person play by Aaron Golden and directed by myself at BoHo's Heartland Studio in Rogers Park this January.

As a new-ish theatre company, the production costs that accompany a new project can be daunting. That's where YOU come in, lovely blog reader. Just Be, or 'It Gets Better' Starts With Bettering Ourselves First

Jamey Rodemeyer's story is incredibly inCREDibly sad, but what's heartbreaking to me was his need for someone like Lady Gaga (with whom I have my own "stop it" issues) to make him feel loved, accepted, and 'liberated.' Why are parents, teachers, friends, and other right-minded people allowing hate-speech to be preached and spread? It shouldn't take a Youtube video, ancient tome, or pop-star whom we don't personally know to make us feel normal.

God bless this poor boy, but why did it take him 14 years to realize we're born this way? And by "this" I mean whatever/however/whichever way we are. We shouldn't need American Top 40 to advocate something as simple as self-acceptance. And it's not Jamey's fault for this sudden realization, kids are kids, but it should not be Lady Gaga's responsibility to teach love.

Be there for your son, daughter, friend, and students when they need you. Fat, skinny, gay, straight, nerdy, shy, or just plain middle-of-the-road. Just be. Hell, being invisibly middle-of-the-road can be just as tough as vibrantly against-the-grain. There is no right.

"Bullying" isn't new, so the whole "anti-bullying" movement miffs me a tad. Kindness shouldn't be taught through a media buzz-word or a new legislative fad. This could be via my Liberal Judea-Christian upbringing (raised Catholic but now just, I dunno, a good enough person), but what the hell happened to just being fucking nice to one another?

I Am Obsessed With/Terrified of Large Abandoned Places

I cannot explain it and do not know where the root of this comes from, but as this post's title suggests, I have an odd fascination / fear of large abandoned places. ESPECIALLY amusement parks.

Six Flags New Orleans under godknowshowmanyfeetofwater after Hurricane Katrina?!?! How effing scary is that!?!?!

When I stumbled across this fantastic/personally horrifying album of pictures from the now abandoned Six Flags New Orleans, I wrote on Facebook: I have this weird fascination/fear of vast, abandoned places. Think it comes from the childhood trips to Disney World. This album freaks me the eff out and gets my adrenaline flowing in equal proportions. wtf?

My mother, an amazing woman and once long-time Disney employee, asked how our beloved childhood vacations prompted these feelings. I replied: Knowing all the ins and outs "behind the magic," how it was all constructed, how popular it was/is, and the thoughts of what it'll be like one day down the line when people either don't go or it closes down (like Riverview or Kiddieland) makes large abandoned happy places scary. It's not necessarily related to Disney exactly, just a very weird thought process I can't fully explain.

So in an effort to move past this fear, here are a few "favorite" shots from this oddly hypnotic tour of the now defunct Six Flags New Orleans.

So I was stumbling/creeping on a friend of a friend of a friend 5 times removed via Facebook and came across the following two pictures some dude had posted on his Wall:

This dude's mother had written, verbatim (grammar, spacing, spelling, etc.), the following in reply to one of them:

this better go off every computer young man......alll programs or you r done w the computer everywhere.i mean it.what is it still on here for..we need to talk tonight....this wiillll b the last time i ask.

Naturally, her comment was under the pot leaf and not the Confederate flags.

How is someone's mother speaking out against a marijuana leaf and not the symbol of slavery and oppression? A symbol popularized, organized, and widely used some 148 years ago.

Any anyone my age or younger who spouts out the ignorant "We're not into slavery, bro. It's about the history of the Southern people. Heritage Not Hate, man." epitaph is blind not only to history and facts, but how one is perceived as a human being.

Is this a just a case of The Cheese Standing Alone, is this one mother's reaction a rarity, or am I just missing something altogether here?

I've been avoiding writing about Arthur Laurents' passing for the past few days. It's been a rough reality, knowing the legacy and what he's left behind in the field I love. Playbill.com's obit can be found here, but here's my one short one-on-one encounter with the 93-year-old Mr. Laurents.

I was fortunate enough to attend the very first preview of Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark on Sunday, November 28, 2010. A wildly innovative and profoundly memorable night of theatre. Three quarters of the way through Act 1, the production was placed in a hold. It was then I looked across the aisle and saw Arthur Laurents sitting a few feet away from me. In the dimly lit hold, I sat nervously motionless as 25 years worth of Gypsy, West Side Story, Rope, Anyone Can Whistle, La Cage, and The Way We Were memories barraged my theatre dork psyche. Act 1 ended and I was left with an Intermission dilemma: do I dare have a brief conversation with the notoriously cantankerous and brutally honest Laurents ... or do I let the moment pass? With 5 minutes left before Act 2's curtain, I mustered up the chutzpah to cross the aisle.

We smiled, exchanged a handshake, and somehow, little me, told him I was a director in Chicago. Surprisingly, 4 years after earning my BFA, this was the very first time I felt accurately comfortable using the phrase "director in Chicago." When he asked what show I was currently working on, I said I was in between projects. A truth, given Reefer Madness! had just closed our our new company was sitting in planning limbo. Without missing a beat (in what I could only assume was pure Arthur fashion), he shook his head and stuck his finger out to shut me up. "No. Always be working." With that, he patted my shoulder and I went back to my seat.Tears welled up as house lights went down, for I (again, little nobody me) had received a small artistic dose of tough Laurents honestly. Blunt honesty I'd heard tell via 60 years of musical theatre lore.

It's a simple mantra from a master: "Always be working." Coming from a writer, a 93-year-old writer no less, it's wonderful being reminded of the bare essentials which bring about a product: work. No, I never worked with Mr. Laurents on a project, nor did his work directly affect my generation of performers, writers, or designers, so maybe that clouds my perception and muddles the truth. Yet, his stamp on the medium I know and love will forever touch future incarnations and interpretations in my field ... and that is an undeniable self truth. Mr. Laurents was a true inspiration.

Finally, OUT Magazine did a wonderful Q and A with the ever-honest Mr. Laurents in March of 2010. Below is the sequence about the original West Side Story's gay production team.

Q) Let’s talk for a minute about the original West Side Story team. Leonard Bernstein was gay but married to a woman. Jerome Robbins was gay but used to call Larry Kert (who played Tony) a “faggot” in rehearsal. You’ve got Sondheim who, well, he had his own issues with his sexuality. There’s a great anecdote in your first book where Tom Hatcher asks you if Sondheim is gay and you say -
A) “I don’t think he’s anything.”

Q) Did the four of you socialize at night?
A) I knew Jerry for years. We were old friends. But we didn’t go out. I didn’t travel in theater circles much.

Q) Why not?
A) First of all, it’s like living in a ghetto. You know? I didn’t want to have a house on Fire Island, either. The other thing is, Tom and I (pictured left) lived together, and they were just terrible to him.

Q) Why?
A) Because I had some kind of name and who the hell was he? Much more, he was incredibly good-looking.

Q) How did you feel when Jerome Robbins called Larry Kert a faggot?
A) I was angry. A lot of people were angry because Jerry was humiliating Larry. But people who didn’t live then didn’t know what it was like. You had to live with a lot you didn’t like.

Q) Did you ever say to Bernstein, “Come on, Lenny? You’re gay. Stop all this nonsense?”
A) The closest I ever came to anything like that was at a gay New Year’s Eve party. Lenny was there, and I said to him, “You have no business being here.” It was very sanctimonious of me and really none of my business. But I thought it was hypocrisy. Lenny didn’t care. He laughed.

A Bit of My Childhood Died Today

Elmer Hauldren's (The Empire Man) commercials were, in an odd pre-Internet pop culture way, a vital part of my up bringing. Even when I was away at college, Mr. Hauldren was a beyond recognizable figure within people in my age-bracket. We all grew up with him and it was a bonding element between those who grew up in the same area, spefically the northwest side of Chicago.

Long-time Empire Today spokesman Elmer Lynn Hauldren, best known as the inspiration for "The Empire Man" character, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2011. He had served as the company's installed home furnishings and home improvement industry icon since the 1970's, providing talent and voiceover support to Empire's advertising campaigns during his career. Lynn was also part of the barbershop quartet that sang the signature 800-588-2300(R) Empire jingle. Lynn was an important part of the Empire family. His contribution to the brand was monumental, and he will truly be missed.

Why Catfish is Amazing

***SPOILER ALERT*** This post contains spoilers. DO NOT READ if you want to enter Catfish with a clean slate, a fact I highly recommend if you wanna see a terribly interesting documentary. ***SPOILER ALERT***

After months of waiting and avoiding all possible spoilers ("Don't let anyone tell you what it is" is their apt tag line), I finally caught Ariel (Ari) Schulman and Henry Joost's emotionally jarring 2010 documentary, Catfish. With Facebook's vein of connection guiding New York photographer Yaniv (Nev) Schulman's correspondence with 8-year-old Abby and her family, Ariel and Henry begin documenting Nev's relationship with the Michigan-based pen pal. Upon first witnessing the trailer last summer, I knew Catfish was going to be different. Didn't know why or how, but something grabbed my attention.

The Boyfriend didn't know anything about it, so I snuggled up in the spare bedroom to watch it alone. I highly recommend watching Catfish alone, as it's one of those movies where people's complaints ("That doesn't make sense!" "I saw that coming!" "That's bs!" Why are they doing that!?) could ruin the experience. You pretty know up front things aren't as they seem with Abby's family, but the reveal (mother Angela posing as her own daughter and 15 or so adjacent family and friends on Facebook) left me feeling heartbroken and sad. Sad for the woman and her lies. Sad that, even at the point of exposing her infatuated feelings to Nev, still lies about, of all things, having cancer. It doesn't come off as malicious. It's just sad.

In all, Catfish is a taught, somber, suspenseful film about connecting, loneliness, and the type of obsession technology brings about. A fresher, tenser, less in-your-face version of The Blair Witch Project. And the title? Oh, the title. You have to wait a good amount of time for its payoff, but yikes, it's quite worth it. Like a good portion of the final 40 minutes, Catfish encompasses a simple, smile-inducing, yet ultimately heavy sentiment. Like Pixar's Up, but with 40-something-year-old pen pals instead of balloons. And not shot in 3-D.

March 24th's The Office Brought Out the Waterworks

Wrought with punchy musical numbers and biting political commentary, REEFER MADNESS! THE MUSICAL is a hilarious and highly stylized satirical spoof.

Set at a 1936 PTA meeting, the show-within-a-show's Lecturer uses scare tactics, song, dance, and a little heavenly intervention to band his audience against a leafy green assassin - "the real public enemy #1."

In Defense of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark During the Week of Its Cancelled 2010/2011 Opening

As someone who 1) saw the very first preview performance of Spider-Man, 2) freelances for a Broadway-themed website, and 3) understands the ins and outs of putting up a show (much less a titanic $65 million dollar show), two contradicting chords struck me when a Major Local Newspaper published this little article.

Another day, another Spider-Man Turn off the Dark opening date on Broadway: this time it's June 14, the show announced late Friday.

The show, therefore, will not be eligible for the 2011 Tony Awards.

Shows between those dates are to be nixed for the much-discussed retooling by the new creative team. Most major critics have already reviewed the show.

I wrote this as a retort to the piece:

"Another day, another Spider-Man Turn off the Dark opening date on Broadway ... Most major critics have already reviewed the show."

The question is, why have they reviewed it? Even you, the head theatre critic for one of the biggest papers in the country, broke polite protocol and reviewed Spider-Man before the production team's set press opening. While I do not know if you paid for the performance you saw, 'why?' remains my big question to those professionals who paid for their tickets and, conversely, were paid to share their opinion to the masses via their occupational outlet despite an official invitation to do so. I can understand an unpaid blogger or message boarder posting their 2 cents, but not those working for major publications.

And this is all coming from a working Chicago theatre artist who sat through the production's first preview performance back in November, fully knowing a good amount of work needed to be done to help the show along despite several innovative advances and moments of beautiful imagery.

Nothing substantial became of my reply, but the whole situation floors me. It's easy to criticize Spider-Man's production team (and that's coming from someone who blogs!) for taking so long to solidify the show, but what seems to be missing from major critics' evaluations is the considerate understanding behind such an enormous endeavor. Plus, there's a respect level being ignored by those writers. If a production has not formally invited the press (read: comped them in) to come review a set, solid, final version, why should a paid writer formally decree their opinions of a show which, in the eyes of those creating the piece, remains incomplete? Who are they to say it's unfixable before the writers and designers put down their pens?

Sure, I did a phone interview with the gentlemen of Stop Podcasting Yourself about my experience at the first preview, but that's all it was: a retelling of my experience. I fully acknowledged it was a preview performance, as well as simply recounted the technical difficulties we sat through. They did not pay me. I didn't lambaste anyone. Yes, the reviews are out in the ether for anyone to read, but just as Spider-Man's marketing team needed to fully disclose their preview status for clarity purposes, early reviewers need to do the same. Stating and sharing opinions without proper disclosure ("This is an unfinished project") is an egregious misrepresentation. I'm rambling now, but as a writer, a theatre-goer, and someone who's created anything before (and let's face it, most of us are), I'm baffled by the critics' decision to determine when something they have no creative investment in is ready to be screened and reviewed.

In the vein of Sondheim's Finishing the Hat, Playbill.com compiled an awesome interview with Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning lyricist, Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof, Fiorello!, She Loves Me, The Apple Tree, The Rothschilds). "Harnick on Harnick: Broadway Lyricist Sheldon Harnick Reflects on His Life in Musicals" offers some great insight on his collaborating leading men, leading ladies, directors, writing, and the current state of Broadway's musical theatre. Not as hearty as the full collection of Sondheim's lyrics, but a nice short must-read for anyone interested in theatre writing and the history behind classic scores.

ON CRAFT, and what he tells young writers about craft: Usually I tell them that the degree of craft they exercise is pretty much up to them, because audiences don't care that much. Audiences will accept off-rhymes, things that are less than pristine about a lyric. So it's up to you to decide how strict you want to be with yourself. I try to be very strict with myself because I want my work to compare with the work of other people I admire most, going back to Gilbert and Sullivan. On rare occasions, I've had to cheat with a rhyme I'm not entirely satisfied with. I tell young writers that for myself I try to make all the rhymes pure, I try to keep the language fresh, I try to exercise my craft in every way I can. I try to sing the songs when I finish them to make sure they're comfortable in my mouth, that consonants don't bump up against one another and make songs hard to understand — all those craft issues. But I recognize that, especially in today's musical market, young writers hear a lot of successful songs that don't bother with that kind of craftsmanship. So I try not to be such a purist and say, "You cannot do this, you must not do that."

The Boyfriend and I stumbled upon two new sites which are, in a word, hot. Out Magazine led us in their direction and lord almighty are East Village Boys and i heart boy tantalizingly attractive sites.

Both sites feature artfully homoerotic photographs of thin, hip, American Apparelesque New York boys wearing barely a thing. Most of the time, they're actually not wearing a thing. I appreciate that their models are, in general, hairy guys who don't manscape a ton. Chest hair, armpit hair, pubes, happy trails, the whole magilla! It's refreshing to see guys looking like regular guys and not like uber-bulked-up Abercrombie bros*.

Here's the way I see it: Darren Aronofsky had a good amount of success with 2008's The Wrestler. He rekindles Mickey Rourke's career and turns him into a hot commodity once again. Two years later, he casts Rourke as Erica, the overbearing stage mother to Natalie Portman's Nina, in Black Swan. Everyone thinks it's Barbara Hershey, but they're wrong. Rourke's playing the role. They look exactly the same.

The Oscars are Sunday and Black Swan has been out for months. How has no one else talked about this yet!?!!?

I got's to say it: Daniel's lines are lookin' good. Sure, it's a still frame, but he's nailing that Rob Ashford dance step. ::right before clicking publish post, notices Daniel's torso looks different from all the other boys:: Hmmm, is Finch's twist suppose to be a little off? I was 4 years old when Richard M. Daley took office.

Since 1989, Richard M. Daley was the mayor of Chicago. The mayor of the city I've live in (short of my 4 years in college) my entire life. The city's longest sitting mayor. A mayor who, despite all the political snobbery, did amazing things in the cleaning up and beautifying of our city. A wonderfully supportive friend to the GLBT community. A strong supporter of the arts and theatre scene in Chicago. A man whose hand I shook once.

He's the only mayor I've ever really known in the city I'd live and die for.
I effing love Chicago.

I am 26 tonight.
Not 30 minutes ago, President Obama's former Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel was elected mayor.
A man I believe in and a man for which I voted.

Where the Watermelons Grow: Dissecting a Lyric From Childhood with Bastardized Footnotes, Forced Conditioning, and Nonacademic Wikisearching

In a communicative sense, word choice is extremely important. Tone is as well, though it's difficult to write about the intricacies of personalized attitude and tone, so today I'm picking my words carefully. And I'm humming while I do it.

It's entirely accurate to blame Stephen Sondheim's new book, Finishing the Hat: Collected Lyrics (1954-1981) with Attendant Comments, Principles, Heresies, Grudges, Whines and Anecdotes for my recent obsessive nitpickery towards lazy writing and word choice. The likes of Misses McCarthy, Taylor, White, and Mr. Sondheim taught me that exercising a writer's noodle and challenging a writer's ability to successfully articulate is no different than a runner's early morning jog or daily caloric intake - though my beer belly may sing a different tune. He's a bass, no doubt.

With Finishing the Hat's linear notes peppering my pre-sleep hours with priceless insight and considerable depth into what makes Stephen Sondheim Stephen Sondheim, I could not help but look at a lyric from childhood with discerningly new eyes. It's one of those songs which unassumingly popped into my head, plagued the first 3 hours of daily consciousness, then swiftly disappeared. That was the case with last week's bout of "Down By the Bay."

For anyone who's not 4 years old, "Down By the Bay" is a traditional children's song made popular by silly-dance-instigator extraordinaire, Raffi, in the mid 1970's. That's correct: a 1970's call-and-response ditty. My unconsciousness is beyond hip.

What prompted the refrain to visit a groggy 26-year-old at 7:15AM is beyond my conscious grasp, but it did allow for a closer inspection of a simple lyric I thought I understood. The tune itself is, oddly enough to this Greek, is based on a traditional Cephalonian cantata song called "Yialo Yialo," but I can only assume the words were written by an English speaker and not translated from the Greek. On paper, "Down By the Bay" reads not only as the nonsensical ramblings of a child, but as a wild confession from one character to another, wrought with imagery, mystery, and an element of danger.

Down by the bay (bay, bay)
Where the watermelons grow* (grow, grow).
Back to my home (home, home)

I dare^ not go (go, go).

For if I do (do, do)
My mother~ will say (say, say),
"[Have you ever seen a fly
Wear a polka dot tie]**
Down by the bay?"

Instead of devising the dirtiest rhyme for the ending couplet like when I was seven ("Have you ever seen a show / Taking a poo?"), "Down By the Bay" now obsessively draws me in to ask question upon question about its origin, its meaning, and the character behind its voice. I'm going to ignore the campfire-inspired echos (ghostly in and of themselves) and simply focus on the lyric's narrative flow.

* "Bay" and "watermelon" offer vague clues towards the speaker's general location, yet never delve into specifics. While watermelons are grown in 44 of our 50 states, Georgia, Florida, Texas, California and Arizona are the largest producers, hinting at the character's possibly Southern or Southwestern roots. With the specific state shrouded in mystery, the bay in question remains unknown.

^ "Dare" is a deliciously strong choice when referring to the speaker's home. It conjures images of danger, regret, and consequences. "I dare not go [home]" offers a glimpse into the type of past the speaker once had and how he or she chooses to live now. Was this a childhood home long abandoned or a current home now evacuated? Either way, going "back" is apparently out of the question.

~ We are thrown a relational bone with the addition of the speaker's mother. We are led to believe she is a woman who enjoys (or is plagued by) riddles, rhymes, and tricky questions. Yet, is she linked to the speaker's inability to go home?

** The mother's nonsensical couplets (whether fly, shoe, or dog-o-centric) are windows into the mental stability of the aging woman. I highly doubt there are tie-wearing-flies or dog-ridin'-frogs down by any bay within any of these 50 states, which leads me to believe mother has entered a stage of dementia. Is her mental state preventing the speaker from returning home? Lower cortex, or subcortial, dementia is occasionally caused by trauma and causes changes in emotions, in addition to problems with memory. Perhaps the speaker's presence at home causes mother's relapses into confusing couplets, or did the speaker cause the trauma which led to mother's condition, a la Garden State's dishwasher.

What propelled me to conduct hours of actual research and (over)analyze this blast from my past? Two points: post-academic stagnancy and writer's conditioning. I've been out of academia for nearly 4 years, and while my library-based research skills were never fully up to par, I have recently found myself feeling detached from new amounts of worthwhile literary knowledge and practice. Not entirely a dumb feeling, but a feeling of foolishly calm complacency. A stagnant state thankfully uprooted by the flabbergastedly morbid notion that no one is no longer forcing me to learn. A truth by which I refuse to be taken over.

So what of all this? Despite unnecessarily immersing myself into a near-meaningless 39-word ditty, perhaps the biggest conundrum I'm left with is a woefully subjective one: is "Down By the Bay" a good lyric? In terms of painting a character portrait, yes. In terms of audience-received clarity, no. The listeners, performers, and/or interrupters are not given all the necessary pieces to complete "Bay's" puzzle, but the elements which are offered conjure up the type of expressive world in which that's ok. Overall, it's a fun mixed bag.
